Specialists try to develop alternative medicines to anabolic steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs. They point out that sportsmen may soon have another way to enhance muscles. The Salk Institute has noted that the efforts of the scientists have got success. Late researches have shown that suppression of a genome regulator that is known as “NCoR1” causes increase of muscle mass, energy and endurance. The leader of the researches conducted in the Salk Institute, Ronald Evans, notices that this knowledge can lead to elaboration of some new preparations that will benefit not only for sportspersons and bodybuilders that train but also for persons that have sedentary lifestyle.
The specialists of the Salk Institute note about individuals that are not able to perform physical exercises because they have got different health troubles, such as diabetes, frailty, immobility and other physical or mental factors that lead to sedentarism. The specialists intend to develop certain specific preparations which could benefit for sedentary people so, as exercises benefit for healthy individuals. Now they make experiments with sedentary mice.
As for anabolic steroids, they can lead to enhancement of muscle size in sedentary individuals. But individuals that apply anabolic steroids must train and modify their diets in order to reach more essential effects.
If new drugs that block NCoR1 are elaborated by specialists successfully, they will lead to essential changes in sedentary people. But could you imagine which benefits will be caused in sportspersons?
But there is also an important difference between anabolic steroids and NCoR1 suppression. It is known that anabolic steroids cause negative symptoms; some of them may be quite dangerous for health and even for life. Moreover, anabolic steroids can lead to serious side results especially in females. But as for NCoR1 suppression, scientists are sure that products that will suppress this genome regulator will not lead to unwanted reactions.
There is an article about NCoR1 suppression that has got the following title: “NCoR1 Is a Conserved Physiological Modulator of Muscle Mass and Oxidative Function”. It describes results of different experiments which involved mice and nematodes. The experiments have displayed that NCoR1 suppression benefits for muscle mass significantly. The mice with suppression of this genome regulator had more increased muscles and ran faster than others.
Unfortunately, the mice with NCoR1 suppression were not compared with the mice that received anabolic steroids. If these two types of mice were compared, the results of the experiments would be very precious for further studies and conclusions.
It is possible to say that elder persons and people who have muscle dystrophy will be soon involved in researchers to check positive effects of new potential medications.
