Officials of the UK will be not capable to stop athletes importing steroids to the UK, when they come to take part in the 2012 Olympic Games. Although intake of steroids is prohibited in sports, personal intake of these drugs is legal in the UK. Just sale of steroids is considered to be illicit in this country. So, if an athlete attempts to import amount of anabolic steroids which is significantly large, he/she will not be permitted to do it.
Before Olympic Games took place in Australia, Canada and China, governments of these countries changed legislation linked with import and usage of steroids at least temporally. But the British government refuses to change steroid legislation for the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Ironically, while the British government doesn’t want to make personal usage of steroids criminal, Britain sportspeople are banned for lifetime, if they use anabolic steroids. As for the WADA Code, athletes that take prohibited products are banned for two years.
Hugh Robertson, the Olympic minister, notes that it is necessary to have a universal policy connected with sentencing. This minister insists on at least four years or even longer. While he is supported by the British Olympic Association, the UK Anti-Doping Agency doesn’t support such harsh punishment. Andy Parkinson, the CEO of the UK Anti-Doping Agency, claims that certain sanctions should be milder.
The Olympic minister acknowledges that there are various points of view in sports and it’s not well but he doesn’t ask the CEO of the UKAD to resign.
The spokesman for Hugh Robertson has noted that any athlete can have steroids in his/her luggage, when he/she comes to London. But the amount of steroids must confirm that he/she possesses them only for self-administration. The spokesman has added that it is not criminal for an athlete to apply steroids under laws of the UK but if any sportsperson is caught taking prohibited medicines, he/she will be punished under anti-doping laws.
The UKAD noticed that they would collaborate with border control officials. Information about athletes will be utilized by anti-doping officials.
5, 000 drug tests will be conducted by the International Olympic Committee. 1, 000 of these tests will be blood tests.
