Some mixed martial artists have publicly acknowledged that they take anabolic steroids as a part of testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) that has been recommended by health care providers. Keith Kizer, the executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC), claims that this aspect has created a perception among major people that steroid exemptions are given to allow MMA fighters to take the steroid testosterone.
During an interview with Ben Fowlkes of MMA Fighting Kizer said that certain individuals believed that any fighter could get exemptions for usage of testosterone. He noted that he couldn’t say it about other states but he described the situation in Nevada. According to Keith Kizer, it is 50/50 whether a request for steroid exemption will be approved.
TRT is a treatment which is required for adult males who have hypogonadism (reduced testosterone levels). If athletes correspond to the medical criteria, they may be allowed to use steroids.
The NSAC has strict requirements for those that try to get a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) for intake of steroids. An athlete must show the document which manifests that blood levels of testosterone are low. But if a fighter has low testosterone level, it is not enough to obtain a TUE. Treating doctors should name reasons and medical conditions. The details linked with testosterone replacement therapy should be described by health care providers as well. Every detail must manifest that certain sportsperson has to administrate testosterone for therapeutic purposes and intake of steroids will not give unfair advantage to the fighter.
Several top athletes of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) have administrated steroids for TRT. Chael Sonnen, Nate Marquardt, Dennis Hallman and Dan Henderson are included in the group of stars who administrate steroids for therapeutic needs.
The executive director of the NSAC claims that ban of steroids makes MMA safer. He adds that if a fighter uses steroids, he/she takes unfair advantage as if it is used knuckles that are hidden inside gloves. So, this is not just cheating. This situation is related to dangers for life. If you say to a fighter that you can put knuckles in the gloves so, as no one will know it, this athlete will say you not to bother him. But it is strangely that such person uses steroids.
It goes without saying that administration of steroids has potential dangers to enhance the harm that may be caused in MMA.
